After stumbling upon a tweet from TheRiotMMO, questioning whether the upcoming game will incorporate procedural generation, I felt inclined to share my thoughts on the matter.

Let me start by saying that procedural generation is not a new concept in the gaming industry. It has been around for quite some time and has been utilized in various games, dating back to as early as Dungeons & Dragons. Procedural generation refers to the process of using algorithms and computer programs to create content autonomously, such as landscapes, textures, and even entire game worlds. Some games that have successfully implemented procedural generation include No Man’s Sky, Minecraft, Spelunky, and even Ragnarok Online, where mobs are randomly generated around the map. Dwarf Fortress is another great example, with the entire game world procedurally generated.

However, while procedural generation can provide a unique and unpredictable gaming experience, it also comes with a significant cost. Developing a procedural generation system requires a substantial investment of time, money, and resources. Unless the system is being used extensively throughout the game, it may not be worth the investment.

With that said, I believe that Riot Games will most likely use procedural generation in their upcoming MMO game. The game’s world map will probably have some degree of randomness, with specific locations changing from time to time. This will help maintain a sense of consistency and familiarity while still providing some degree of unpredictability.

Procedural generation will also be used to generate random mob spawns, quests, or dungeons. This will add an element of surprise and excitement to the game, as players will never know what they will encounter on their adventures.

Moreover, using procedural generation can help Riot Games save money and resources by generating the entire world of Runeterra instead of crafting each individual map manually. This will give players a vast and immersive gaming experience without sacrificing quality.
