Justin Hanson, better known by his Riot Games handle “Riot Xenogenic,” announced on Twitter that April 14th was his last day working as a principal game designer on the untitled MMO at Riot Games. Hanson has been with Riot Games for over five years and has contributed to the development of several of the company’s most popular games, including League of Legends and Valorant.
Hanson expressed mixed emotions about leaving Riot Games in his tweet, saying that he was “very sad to be leaving” but “excited for a new adventure on the other” hand. He praised the team working on the MMO project, calling them “world-class,” and expressed gratitude for having been a part of it.
Hanson also expressed his gratitude to the League of Legends and Valorant communities, thanking them for their support and enthusiasm for the games he worked on. He cited the Nunu and Mordekaiser updates as the highlight of his 15-year career, and expressed appreciation for the nonstop requests for gun buddies in Valorant.
Despite rumors circulating on social media that Hanson’s departure was due to a massive layoff at Riot Games, he clarified that it was a personal choice. It is not yet clear what Hanson’s plans are for the future, but some Twitter users have speculated that he may be joining the new studio founded by former Riot Games lead game designer Greg Street, aka Ghostcrawler.
Hanson’s departure, along with the recent departures of other Riot Games employees, has raised questions about the future of the company and its projects. However, Riot Games has not commented on the situation at this time.
