As someone who has never played Destiny 2, it may seem odd that I have an opinion on whether or not it is an MMORPG. However, after conducting some research and speaking with other gamers, I have come to the conclusion that Destiny 2 is not a true MMORPG.
One of the defining characteristics of an MMORPG is a persistent world. In other words, the game world exists and evolves whether or not the player is actively participating. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Destiny 2. The game is not open world, and most of the activities take place in instanced areas. This means that players are limited to specific activities and cannot interact with others in the game world unless they are in a party together.
While Destiny 2 is a cooperative game, it lacks the sense of community that is characteristic of MMORPGs. In an MMORPG, players often interact with each other in the game world, trading items, participating in player-run events, and forming relationships with other players. However, in Destiny 2, players are primarily limited to interacting with each other during specific activities, such as raids or crucible matches.
Another factor that contributes to Destiny 2 not being a true MMORPG is the game’s limited economy. In an MMORPG, players can often trade items with each other or participate in an in-game economy. However, in Destiny 2, there is no real economy to speak of, which further limits the player’s ability to interact with others in the game world.
While Destiny 2 has some elements of an MMORPG, such as cooperative gameplay and the ability to play with others in a party, it ultimately falls short of being a true MMORPG due to the lack of a persistent, open world and limited economy. As someone who enjoys MMORPGs, I would not consider Destiny 2 to be in the same category as games such as Ragnarok Online or World of Warcraft.
